Sound Surprises

Wow! This morning we had a real treat! Drew Malloy came in to talk about sound to the year 5/6s. He showed us what sound waves look like on a graph, demonstrated the properties of a wave with children being molecules moving around. He then showed us and played a pure note and we very quickly realised that instruments like trumpets, recorders and clarinets do not produce pure notes but produce a variety of different notes - called overtones. The children were fascinated by the fact that Drew had written his own app to show the children how we feel when we listen to particular chords - minor and major. Major make us feel happy whereas minor chords make us feel sad.
Thank you Drew for a passionate and fascinating talk!
