Kilvrough Day 1

We’ve had a fantastic start to our Kilvrough adventure. We had a seamless journey with a quick comfort break on the way. A lovely lunch of soup and fruit was followed by problem solving activities to support team work in preparation for the week’s challenges which lie ahead.

Our evening meal of curry, rice and salad (which was surprisingly popular) was consumed in great quantities before we embarked on orienteering to familiarise ourselves with the grounds.

The children are now all settled in bed and are looking forward to tomorrow, which will be caving for some groups and canoeing for the others.

Conscience Alley

I walked in to Anaconda's class this morning and happened to see them using drama to help them understand a character more. They have been reading the book Street Child as part of their Victorian's topic. Today they were thinking about what advice they would give the main character Jim about whether he should try to escape from the workhouse or not.
One half of the class were suggesting reasons as to why he should leave and the others why he should stay. They then formed a "Conscience Alley" in the classroom with both viewpoints on different sides. As "Jim" walked though the alleyway, he listened to the children's arguments one at a time and was persuaded to leave at the end!
I was really impressed with the emotional responses that were given showing how well the children understand the book and can't wait to see how these develop further in their writing this term.

Meet the Stinkers Production

This week the Year 5/6 children were visited by the Stinkers! The production aimed to help the children understand the physical and mental effects of smoking. The children were amazed to find out that there are around 4,000 toxins in one cigarette, and that 60 of these can cause cancer and other life threatening illnesses. The Stinkers discussed peer pressure and how the children can make the right decisions in their youth, in order for them to lead better lives in the future.

DHK Training

Last week, Emmet completed his first training day at DHK Headquarters in North Devon. He was an absolute star and we both learnt a lot. Many new things to be practised before our next training day in the new year. Further details of our training day can be found on the Dogs Helping Kids Facebook page.

Hogitat

The children in KS1 have been making Hogitats (Hedgehog Houses) for their area. Here are some pictures - they are well camouflaged! The children may want to make some for their gardens over the holiday. 

Black History Month

Here are the year 5s learning about the amazing art of the Ndebele tribe as part of Black History month. Not only have the children created symmetrical and beautiful pictures, all of their straight lines have been drawn freehand just like the Ndbele! Hope you enjoy them!

Year 5&6 Science

In Science, this week, Year 5/6 have been looking at the life cycles of plants. They discovered just how bees cross pollinate flowers and thoroughly enjoyed exploring and dissecting lilies!
