Think back to 1939, England had just declared war on Germany. Many people from major towns and cities had to be evacuated to Cholsey for safety...
On Thursday, the children in LKS2 had first hand experience of what it would be like to be evacuated. The children came to school dressed as evacuees and got evacuated to Wallingford by the steam train. Once at Wallingford, the children were integrated into their new school (St Johns Primary) and spent time getting to know some of the pupils there. When we had word that the war was over, we returned to Cholsey by steam train and celebrated with our very own VE Day street party.
This was a lovely way to complete our topic of World War II. We are very grateful to all the adults, who helped us out on the day ensuring that this experience could take place. A big 'Thank You' to the members of the Cholsey/Wallingford Railway for helping us to create such an authentic experience for the children. A very big 'Thank You' also to Beth Woods for her amazing photography skills on the day. We will shortly be creating a Memory Display board in the library space for parents to view the photographs.
